INDONESIA IS DIVE DESTINATION 2017

Dive Magazine: The most popular dive destination for 2017 is Indonesia. It won by a large margin with 22,552 votes from our readers, Papua New Guinea came in second with 6,089 votes and the Philippines third with 3,313. Indonesia was always clear favourite to win the title with such a staggering array of world-class diving. From Raja Ampat to Bali, from Komodo to Sulawesi, Indonesia has more celebrated dive resorts than any other country.

Indonesia’s Finance Minister: Optimistic that 5.1% growth will be achieved

Joining Asia House for an exclusive interview straight from the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Baden-Baden, Indonesia’s Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati outlined that whilst the world is facing a wide range of uncertainties at this moment, growth prospects for Indonesia look positive. She said that “We are very optimistic that 5.1 per cent will be achieved this year.” She also discussed Indonesia’s huge need for infrastructure, outlining that “The amount of the budget allocation for infrastructure spending has tripled in the last three years. We’ve also increased the amount of money for land acquisition.”

Indonesian gamelan masters tour UK universities

A gamelan maestro from the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Surakarta, Prasadiyanto, is in Glasgow, Scotland, to share knowledge and skills about the traditional Indonesian instrument with students, academics and other communities. It is part of the “Gamelan artist-in-residence” program organized by the Indonesian Embassy in London and the Education and Culture Ministry. “The program is aimed at promoting Indonesian culture in the UK,” said education and cultural attaché E. Aminudin Aziz in a press release made available to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

S&P lifts Indonesia sovereign rating to investment grade, cheering markets

Rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) upgraded Indonesia’s sovereign ratings to investment grade on Friday, a long-awaited move that sent Jakarta shares soaring on hopes it could spur a wave of investment into Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. Fund managers say the investment grade from S&P, which matches the ratings awarded by Fitch and Moody’s years ago, will give Indonesia access to a wider pool of investors. A rating upgrade usually also means an economy can get cheaper borrowing costs when it issues bonds. S&P upgraded Indonesia’s sovereign credit outlook to BBB-, its lowest investment grade, up from the previous junk status of BB+. The agency gave the new rating a stable outlook.

Gamelan at the inauguration of the new Indonesian Embassy in London. Sarah has played with this group – called Siswa Sukra for a while and they are about to go on tour in Indonesia, which is very exciting. I was thrilled to be able to join them tonight (more thrilled than Boris Johnson apparently, who had to decline his invitation as he was at a banquet with the King of Spain).
