Jakarta, Indonesia- “United Kingdom is one of the most important trade partners in Europe and the biggest investor in Indonesia,“ said Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Mahendra Siregar, when receiving the visit of UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister Heather Wheeler, at the Foreign Affairs Ministry Office in Jakarta (14/01/2020). A cooperation with UK become an important priority to strengthen the Indonesian economic diplomacy in Europe, added Mahendra. Both Indonesia and UK agreed to enhance economic cooperation in potential fields such as trade and investment, creative industry including digital technology in finance sector (fintech), renewable technology, education and human resource development, maritime, and many more.
UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister Heather Wheeler positively welcomed Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia’s statement to continue improving the cooperation between Indonesia and UK, mainly in bilateral trade including investment and education through Trade Review mechanism. It is seen as a concrete step to prepare the Indonesia-UK comprehensive economic cooperation after the UK left the European Union to provide more economic benefit for both countries.
The visit from UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister Heather Wheeler is seen as an assertion of Indonesia and UK partnership commitment and friendly relationship. Other than bilateral issue, the efforts to improve the cooperation in global and regional issues which became common interest was also been discussed. The visit has a good sign to increase the cooperation intensity in various fields between Indonesia and UK to achieve the economic growth and people’s welfare.
Vice Minister Mahendra Siregar also mentioned the plan of Indonesia to be the host of World Economic Forum – ASEAN Indo-Pacific Infrastructure and Connectivity Forum in July 2020, and invited UK to participate in Halal Industry Summit at the end of 2020 in Jakarta.
Minister Wheeler visited Jakarta from 13 until 15 January 2020. This was her first time to visit Indonesia since her assignment in July 2019. Other than Indonesian Foreign Vice Minister Mahendra Siregar, she will also meet the Deputy Minister of Trade, ASEAN Secretary General and to inaugurate the UK Permanent Mission office for ASEAN.
